The Organ Festival

In music it is called “the king of the instruments”. Pipe Organ or just Organ, it surprises your senses with the magnificence of its boxes, richly worked and with the enveloping sound that fills the temples.

Braga, known as the “City of the Archbishops” is full of artistic examples, both cultural and religious, displaying since the 16th to the 18th century Baroques’s musical splendor, which enriches the churches with high quality instruments.

Braga is also known by its many churches, gathering at the same time a large number of organs with historical interest, mostly from the 17th century. There is a total of 46 instruments, all of them created in different ways, which makes them unique. In the last couple of years, due to the effort of several organizations, some of these instruments came to life again and filled the churches and the city with their amazing sounds. Some go unnoticed, but others, like the Great Organs of Braga Cathedral are mentioned in encyclopedias and magazines and became well known all over the world, delighting those who see and hear them.

Braga’s Organ Festival starts with the purpose of making this cultural richness known to more and more people, not only the instruments themselves but the music composed specifically for them.

Following the success of the first editions, the 11th Braga International Organ Festival is born, this year dedicated to the "wind." We can hear and see various types of wind instruments, in compositions for organ, with trumpet, oboe, trombone, and other instruments such as alphorns, sheng, cornetto, whistler, orchestras, and plenty of movement.

The festival will take place form the 2th to the 18th May.

The entrance is free.
